Strange Facts You May Not Know Yet - Part 1

I have read so many interesting and definitely strange facts today and I wanted to share it to everybody. It's just that I'm not really sure if some of them are true.

1. A shrimp's heart is in its head.


     
I made a research on this and found out that it is true. The heart of a shrimp is found in its head because its heart is found in the Cephalothorax. 

2. The only two animals that can see behind itself without turning its head are the rabbit and the parrot.

3. Watermelons are a popular gift to bring to a host in China or Japan.

4. Watermelons can cost up to $100 in Japan.

5. Farmers in Japan have come up with a way to make watermelons more suited for refrigerator storage. They have started making them square!

6. The "sixth sick sheik's sixth sheep's sick" is said to be the toughest tongue twister in the English language.

7. It cost 7 million dollars to build the Titanic and 200 million to make a film about it. 

8. Lima beans contain cyanide.



From the research I've made, lima beans will not actually kill you, but they are one of many plants which naturally contain some level of the deadly poison cyanide and should not be eaten raw. However, there are varieties of this beans which are low in cyanide levels that is allowed and safe to be eaten.

9. Rats multiply so quickly that in 18 months two rats could have over a million descendants.

10. An ostrich egg would take four hours to boil.

11. When hippos are upset, their sweat turns red. 

From what I've read, the skin of hippos secretes a natural sunscreen substance which is red-colored. The secretion is sometimes referred to as "blood sweat," but is neither blood nor sweat. This secretion is initially colorless and turns red-orange within minutes, eventually becoming brown. Two distinct pigments have been identified in the secretions, one red and one orange. The two pigments are highly acidic compounds. They are known as red pigment hipposudoric acid and orange pigment norhipposudoric acid. The red pigment was found to inhibit the growth of disease-causing bacteria. The light absorption of both pigments peaks in the ultraviolet range, creating a sunscreen effect.

12. Draftsmen need to make 27,000 drawings for the manufacturing of a new car.

13. Your left lung is smaller than your right lung to make room for your heart. 

14. The chemical name of caffeine is 1,3,7 trimethylantihine.


15. Wearing headphones for just an hour will increase the bacteria in your ear by about 700 times.

16. Most lipsticks contains fish scales.




Lipsticks contain an ingredient known as pearlescence which is a silvery substance that can found in fish scales used in some lipsticks, so as to give the lipsticks a nice shimmery effect.

17. An olive tree can live up to 1500 years old.

18. Chewing gums while peeling onions will keep you from crying.


19. The reason most mosquito bites itch is because mosquitoes inject saliva into the persons skin before they suck your blood. The saliva has an anti coagulant agent to stop clotting and hence is an irritant to the skin.

20. A duck's quack doesn't echo, and no one knows why.

21. In ancient Greece, children of wealthy families were dipped in olive oil at birth to keep them hairless throughout their lives. 

22. Frogs sometimes eat enough fireflies that they themselves glow.
